Whitstable butterfly room (3-5 years)
Graded ‘Outstanding’ in all areas by Ofsted, our butterfly room is unique in both its facilities, experiences and activities offered.
As our children transform into butterflies our experienced high quality care continues. Practitioners expertly guide our children through the wonders of learning, helping them to adapt to a range of different activities in a more structured environment. Learning is enjoyable and rewarding with a good balance of child initiated play and adult led activities.
Our butterfly team are motivated, highly qualified and experienced in early years. The team apply the key person approach and provide a rich learning environment for children getting ready to go to school.
Our butterfly room is spread over two areas and our children have the choice to free flow, which ensures they access all areas of the curriculum. Children are offered both adult and child led play, in abundance allowing our confident little learners to thrive.
‘Our child had a wonderful transition into their new room, talking a lot about their new key person and what they have been up to each day. It has been lovely to see our child’s development at our parents meeting and planning next steps together. Thank you Choochoos’, (Parent, December 2020).
Being a converted ticket office for the railway station our butterfly room is home to many large windows and high ceilings, the indoors is bright and welcoming. Areas are zoned and include play for construction and small world, puzzles and games, music and movement, books, art, craft and mark making, role play, and more. Our environment allows children opportunities to be involved in group play or to have time relax. Resources are age and stage appropriate and all are accessible for independent play.
Our butterfly children access the outdoors throughout the day, with the garden forming a main part of their daily routine. Practitioners guide and support our children during their time outside with activities and experiences individually planned for. Resources can be accessed independently in an environment home to many natural materials including a vegetable patch, digging area, logs and bug hotel.
Our gardens are separated into two spacious areas, one designed for creative little minds and the other to practice and develop gross physical play. Our children are given the choice to enjoy both.
The first garden is designed to be accessed during all weathers and is protected by an all weather canopy. We provide protective clothing allowing the children to feel and enjoy all elements the weather brings us. In this garden exploratory play is in abundance with access to water play, sand pit, a self selecting shed, bikes, scooters, cars, and sensory equipment.
Our second garden encourages children into a natural environment. Our children are able to see and hear the trains in this area which they never appear to tire of. Home to a vegetable patch, bug hotel, a pirate ship, construction area and a mud kitchen. There are many opportunities to take risks and is ideal for children to form friendships and discover their world.
From this garden the children have access to an exciting indoor cabin. Divided into two parts the cabin offers a place for privacy, rest and sensory experiences and the chance for children to get creative in the woodwork station. This cabin is accessed in small groups and closely supervised. Choochoos is passionate about the depth that woodwork has to offer. introducing children to many activities to encourage creativity.
The routine is thoughtfully planned to encourage independence and confidence. Our experienced practitioners ensure our routine prepares our children for school. Small group times take place including circle time, music and movement, stories, letters and sounds and plan, do and review. Plan, do and review is fully implemented, where children first plan what materials they want to work with, what they want to do and whom they want to do it with. Once they have made a plan, however vague, of what they want to do, they can put their ideas into practice. Then, after this chosen work time, our children come together and discuss what they did and whether it was the same as, or different from, what they had planned. They can then revisit and develop this activity if desired.
Outings & walks
Based in the heart of Whitstable Choochoos is in the most excellent location. Regularly the children access the beach, harbour, town, library, castle and park, all within close proximity. Many local primary schools welcome our visits and the children often link up for performances. We also go further a field to farms, zoos and other local nurseries. Our children love going out to explore and often the decision is very spontaneous.
