‘In-house Safeguarding and Child Protection Training – Very informative delivery and good guidance’, (Staff member, May 2020).
Choochoos is committed to training and improving the knowledge of our team. We are proud of the robust in-house, online and professional training opportunities we deliver for all of our staff.
As a valued team member staff have the opportunity to work with people of all ages and with children from birth to 5. The love of children coupled with great communication skills are essential, as is the ability to be organised and pro-active to be thinking of a career with us.
As well as gaining invaluable experience, at Choochoos staff will always have an opportunity to update their knowledge and training so they are always current.
For our staffing team we provide all core training free, including first aid, health and safety, safeguarding, fire awareness, prevent and food hygiene. These are delivered through in-house, online and professional courses.
‘I started at Choochoos as a student, whilst studying for my level 2 in Childcare at college. Whilst on my placement I was offered to become supply staff, working with flexible hours, whilst still studying. Once I had completed my course at college in 2010, I was asked to become a full time early years practitioner and a key person. Choochoos then organised for me to complete my level 3 in childcare, which I could do in my spare time at home. This allowed me to work, while gaining more experience and having a hands on approach’, (Jade, was student, now a staff member, May 2019).
All staff have a comprehensive induction and are given a training development plan. Together with management, training is focused on their own personal needs and where they would like to improve. Courses range from ‘Fun with mathematics, to forest school and outdoor play’. Every staff member can update their knowledge and experience at a pace suited for them.
Choochoos invest regularly in improving staff with their current child care qualifications. Staff are encouraged to complete their NVQ level 2 and 3 in childcare and continue if interested to a degree and early years teacher status.
We invest in apprentices and support their learning, working closely with local training providers and colleges. All students receive a mentor and advice from our student advocate.
